ICG and Teras launch Templus, the first Southern Europe regional data centre platform

"We are looking to democratise data and to bring data closer to individuals and companies, rather than putting the onus on people to move closer to the data"
  • Templus has been created by ICG’s infrastructure team (“ICG Infra”) alongside Teras, an investment platform.
  • Templus utilises a new business model premised on infrastructure’s close-to-end customers, digital security, and the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency.

ICG, the global alternative asset manager, and Teras Capital (“Teras”), the investment platform led by successful digital infrastructure entrepreneurs, today announced the launching of Templus (“the platform”). Templus is the first state-of-the-art and sustainable regional data centre platform in Southern Europe, with a new business model premised on proximity to end customers, safety and the highest standards of energy efficiency. Ultimately, its goal is to become the leading regional colocation platform in Southern Europe with a network of more than 20 data centres.

Templus is led by Nacho Velilla, former global vice president and Managing Director for Spain of Equinix and former president and cofounder of Spain DC, the Spanish National Data Centre Association, with support from a team of seasoned professionals in the digital infrastructure sector. The platform will begin its activity with five operational data centres, including locations in Madrid, Malaga and Seville, and with an installed capacity of 15MW. Recently, the platform presented at DCD>Connect Madrid 2024, a core event within the data centre industry.

Templus is differentiated from other data centre operators dedicated to colocation on the basis of three distinct pillars: proximity, security standards, and sustainability and efficiency. The close proximity of data centre locations to where the data is generated and used allows Templus to reduce latency. High security standards and a focus on the interconnection and development of regional business ecosystems enables more secure applications and services by reducing the amount of sensitive data transmitted, limiting the volume of data stored in individual locations, and decreasing vulnerabilities in the wider network.

Finally, with sustainability and efficiency at its core, Templus’s state-of-the-art facilities and services facilitate a responsible digital transformation, where the environmental impact is minimized by using 100% renewable energy with best-in-class efficiency indicators. In this regard, the platform is committed to the 2030 Agenda and has developed ambitious ESG criteria, which includes the reduction of PUE and WUE in its facilities.

Nacho Velilla, CEO of Templus, commented:

We are looking to democratise data and to bring data closer to individuals and companies, rather than putting the onus on people to move closer to the data. The proximity of the data to the end user facilitates the digitisation process and these facilities should not only be provided by companies that are located near large national or European hubs: any company should have the same digital opportunities regardless of where they operate. And if we can keep information closer to the users who need it, we will be more efficient, faster and safer.
